This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. It’s so ironic that I’m starting this post with a line from one of my favourite childhood Sunday-school songs. Growing up, my mum would take me to church on a Sunday and I would join other children in song and story-listening in Sunday school. I loved it when we sang this song, I would sing all the words the loudest, but, really, I am only beginning to understand the meaning of it now.

I believe we all have a light within us. This bright light that was placed in each of us when we entered the earth. Warmth, happiness and even beauty radiate from this light within. As I have gotten older, I have also realised that life is like a constant wind trying to blow off my light. Life is the big bad wolf that huffs and puffs and tries anything to dim your light, it simply does not want you to shine.

I have also learnt that it is my responsibility to keep my light bright and alive. I decide how much I allow life to affect my light. This means my reactions to life events are deliberately chosen to ensure that my light stays alight. I choose to not give anything or anyone else control of my shine, so nothing can dim the light that was placed within me. I have seen and experienced the short-term happiness that comes from seeking things that are external or material. It does not even compare to the everlasting joy that comes from seeking happiness within oneself.

I enjoy being a happy person. I want to share light and positivity with others. I want to radiate a beauty that has nothing to do with what I look like or what I’m wearing. I want to be beautiful within. This week I say haha to everyone and everything that tried to rob me of my light, I conquer that negativity by continuing to be positive, to focus on my light, to allow it to shine and to radiate that warmth to everyone I meet.

I hope you stand up to life, and choose to let your little light shine bright. x MC
